Whiz Kid: Miller Place Alumni Continues To Excel

Heather Honor, class of 2013, has a number of accomplishments her first year out of Miller Place High School.

Accomplishments: Heather is currently a freshman at the University of New Haven.  While at Miller Place High School, Heather was on the high honor roll and took seven Advanced Placement (A.P.) and/or college level classes, earning the Award for General Academic Excellence and the President's Award for Academic Excellence.  She played the violin from fourth through twelfth grades in the school district's Orchestra programs.  A member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society, Heather volunteered for Safe Halloween, Dig Pink and Christmas Magic events.  She was on the Winter Track Team as a freshman and on the Varsity Cheerleading Team in both her sophomore and junior years.

Heather was a Girl Scout from Kindergarten through 12th grade, volunteering her time for numerous community endeavors, including beach clean-ups, Relay for Life, food drives, PTO events and sending the overseas military cards and gifts.  She earned her Bronze Award for her work with the Two Day Long Island Breast Cancer Walk, and her Silver Award by maintaining a planting area for three years with her troop at Heritage Park.  This past summer, she completed her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve.  Her Gold Award project involved teaching younger Girl Scouts how to safely cook and bake while incorporating activities that would allow those girls to complete requirements for badges at their age levels.  The food they cooked was donated to a local soup kitchen.  Heather also ran a food drive through the high school's sports teams, donating the food to community food pantries.

Heather danced ballet, tap, pointe, jazz and lyrical for 14 years with the Jan Christ Studio of Dance and has been employed at Dunkin' Donuts, Cara Mia and Sterling Telecom.  At the University of New Haven, she is double majoring in Chemistry and Forensic Science with the career goal of becoming a forensic toxicologist.  She was the recipient of the Congressional Merit Award.
