Nassau Sending Convoy Of Supplies To Support Hurricane Helene Relief
County workers will also help with recovery efforts in North Carolina.

MINEOLA, NY — Hurricane Helene brought historic flooding to parts of the Southeast with the death toll at 179, the Associated Press reports.
More than a million customers were still without power in Western North Carolina on Wednesday.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman recalled the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, when workers from the south pitched in on Long Island. He said it's now time to be there for residents in North Carolina and Georgia.

Blakeman said county officials received a distress call from the Fraternal Order of Police for any assistance, "specifically they asked for any water, bug repellent [and] non-perishable food."
Additionally, fire departments across the county have set up collection bins for items.

"On Friday, we will have a convoy heading down south," he said.
Not only will members of the Fire Marshal's office and county's Office of Emergency Management deliver the essential items, "but they'll also pitch in and help with some of the recovery efforts that are being made."
Blakeman said: "We stand up when it's necessary to help others in other regions and other locations."
President Biden was given an aerial tour of North and South Carolina on Wednesday and said 1,000 active-duty soldiers will be sent to help distribute food, water and supplies, the AP said.
