Protesters Gather In Nassau To Support Immigrants

In comes on the heels of the county police forming a partnership with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

MINEOLA, NY — Dozens of protesters stood outside the Nassau County Legislative Building in support of immigration rights.

Among the signs being held by protesters said: "Immigrants Make America Great," "Stop Racist Policing," and "You Should Love More Than What U Hate."

The Long Island Communist Party USA posted photos to X from the large assembly on Friday afternoon.

"I'm angered that parents are scared to send their children to school," said Jessica Greenberg, an immigrant attorney. "I'm angry that people are scared to go to church."

Legislator Carrie Solages (D-Elmont) also spoke to the crowd saying "this is the latest fight of civil rights."

Joe Sackman, executive director for the Long Island Progressive Coalition said, "We can help each other. We can fight for our community. We can build our future together."

Earlier this month, County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced a new partnership between the county police and the federal government's Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Ten detectives would immediate join the ICE program to "pick up targeted illegal migrants who've committed crimes."

However, the controversial plan to arm citizens as special deputies during emergencies, Blakeman said, "I do not see a circumstance where they would ever be any part of this."
