NEW CITY, NY — A terrifying ordeal at a Rockland County home has now led to kidnapping and weapons charges.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced that 49-year-old Eduardo Hernandez, of Garnerville, was arraigned on Tuesday on an indictment charging him with second-degree kidnapping and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

According to court documents, on Sept. 14, around 5:25 p.m., Hernandez attacked a woman outside a home in the Village of Haverstraw. He then abducted the woman by "restraining her with intent to prevent her liberation" as he grabbed her by the neck and held a screwdriver to her throat, threatening to use deadly physical force.

Investigators found his vehicle and initiated a traffic stop the next day, around 9:15 a.m., in Stony Point. Hernandez fled on foot, but was quickly captured and taken to the Haverstraw Police Department.

"When someone commits a violent act, the impact extends far beyond the victim. It shakes our entire community," DA Walsh said. "This is why we will fight vigorously for a successful prosecution."

The investigation was conducted by the Haverstraw Police Department, with help from the Stony Point Police Department, and the Rockland County Sheriff's Office.

The case is being prosecuted by Supervising Assistant DA Gerard M. Damiani III of the Special Victims Unit and Senior Assistant DA Kaitlin DeLuca.
