Hamptons Man Charged With Boating While Intoxicated On North Fork: Police

He told police that he'd find a ride home, then set off on the boat, anyway, police say.

NORTH FORK, NY — A Southampton man was arrested and charged with boating while intoxicated in Southold, police said.

According to Southold Town police, the incident took place on September 28 at 6:45 p.m.; a report came in that an intoxicated person, Charles Laurence, 61, was trying to leave the Waypoint Restaurant in Southold on a red boat.

Laurence was located on his boat, which was tied to the dock, poice said. Laurence was interviewed and stated he would leave the boat for the night and get a ride home, police said.

After officers left the restaurant, Laurence reboarded the boat, started it, and left in a southerly direction into Southold Bay, police said.

The Southold Police Department's marine patrol observed Laurence leaving and stopped him in Southold Bay, police said.

Laurence was towed to the Southold DEC ramp, where he was ultimately arrested, charged with BWI, and transported to Southold Town police headquarters for processing, police said.
