Gabby Stroup, director of operations at The League on the North Fork, said Shadow's story breaks her heart. "This poor guy has been in and out of the shelter his whole life," she said.

Shadow, a Doxie hound mix who is about 6 years old and 35 lbs., originally came to the League at four months old from another shelter in October, 2020.

"He was then adopted out in November of 2020," she said. "He lived with his new dad until August, 2021. Shadow's dad was in the military and was being deployed, so Shadow ended up back with us."

Next, Stroup said: "Shadow was lucky enough to find another dad in September of 2021. He lived with him until his dad sadly passed away with Shadow in the home with him."

Shadow ended up back at the shelter in July, 2023. "Then Shadow was able to find a new mom in November of 2023," she said. "Sadly, bad times were to come again — and she lost her house and could not care for him any longer. So Shadow came back to us — yes, again — in March of 2025."

She added: "It's very sad. It's never been anything that he's done wrong, that lands him back at the shelter."

Shadow, she said, "is still waiting for his person and, hopefully, his forever home!"

Shadow, she said, takes some time to get to know his new people, but "once he does, he’s your best friend."

He is house-trained and has tested well with cats and other dogs, but Stroup would not recommend a home with children; he would do well in a quiet home environment, she said.

Shadlow loves to go on walks, snuggling on laps on the couch, and is a medium energy pup who loves to play tug.

"He will make someone a great companion," she said."He also would make a great protector."
