NORTHPORT, NY — Kathy and May, best friends around 1 to 2 years old, are the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cats of the Week.

Kathy was found underneath a cover on a woman's outdoor furniture, protecting her five babies from the elements, said Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue.

"She was absolutely gorgeous, and full of fluff," Wild said. "Once you held her, you realized she was so light and tiny, but she would have done anything to protect her babies. She was very easy to take into rescue. Practically picked her and her babies up as if we were friends forever. Kathy knew we were there to help her."

Wild said Kathy was a "great mommy," nursing and cleaning her kittens.

"When it was time for her babies to move on to foster care, they were all amazing…sweet personalities just like their mom, and all were adopted rather quickly," Wild said. "Kathy went to a very loving foster home. She was such a gentle soul, but a little timid. She is now the most affectionate little girl, always wanting to be pet, playing with the dog she is fostered with and snuggling with her best friend May."

May is another momma kitten that had babies. None of her kittens made it, Wild said.

"May was distraught and depressed. She was in a foster home with some other kittens, and would curl up with them, and gently snuggle and love them like her own. We decided to move May to the same foster home where Kathy was. They became best friends almost immediately. Kathy never left May’s side while she was grieving for her kittens. Now, May is a happy cat, playful and silly. She loves Kathy and even plays with the dog that they are being fostered with. May has had such loss in her short little life, that our goal is to get her adopted with her best friend Kathy."

They are both still young, estimated to be under 2 years old, Wild said.

"Kathy is simply beautiful with her long fur and beautiful green eyes," she said. "As beautiful as she is on the outside, she is just as lovely inside and deserves to be taken care of with all the kindness that she has given so many, and May has a heart full of love, and she is just looking to share it. In a rescue full of kittens, we just want these two to capture someone’s heart."

They are spayed, have all their shots, are litter box-trained, micro-chipped and FELV/FIV negative.
