Northport, NY — Caroline Hines, of East Northport, won a donation from PSEG Long Island last month for her Girl Scout Gold Award project on the decline of the bee population. Hines, a Suffolk County Girl Scout, created a YouTube channel to educate young people about the issues facing the bee population, as part of The Helping Kids Help Bees project.

The $200 donation was presented to Hines at a recent ceremony.

“PSEG Long Island is proud to support the future of Long Island by helping students like Caroline educate others on the importance of protecting the environment,” said Rick Walden, vice president of Customer Services, PSEG Long Island. “Bees are an integral part of the environment. They pollinate the beautiful plants and flowers that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen from their leaves.”

The Helping Kids Help Bees project is designed to help children learn about the decline and also pitch in and help by creating bee boxes and planting certain bee-friendly plants. The Girl Scout Gold Awards are dedicated to projects from Girl Scouts that tackle important issues and aim to make positive change and are considered prestigious when it comes to college admissions.

“Bees are dying. Colony collapse, pesticides, and human interference are killing bee colonies off by the thousands,” said Hines. “Something as simple as planting a flower garden outside will help bees find a safe, local food source. I am grateful to PSEG Long Island for supporting my project.”
