Police: Assistant Principal Sexted Students

An assistant principal at a nearby school district was arrested as he left his Northport home Monday morning after police allege he sent inappropriate texts to students and co-workers. 

Suffolk County Police have charged Craig Cohen, 47, a Wyandanch High School assistant principal, with three counts of second degree aggravated harassment and one charge of endangering the welfare of a child. 

“He’s in a position of power at the school,” said Suffolk Police Lt. Terrence Fanning, who confirmed some of the texts were sexual in nature. “I would consider it a serious offense. It’s absolutely serious.’’

Police said Cohen sent several inappropriate texts from his cell phone to students and faculty members between February and March. But Fanning said the case is ongoing and the investigation may broaden as more victims step forward. 

"There were numerous texts, way more than a dozen," Fanning said.

The First Precinct Crime Section asks anyone who may have information related to this case to call 631-854-8126.

Cohen, who worked in the school district for about eight years, was arrested at 7:10 a.m. as he left his Laurel Hill Road home, just one block from Northport High School.

Cohen will be held overnight at the First Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.
