Race Memorializing Young Marine Returns to E. Northport

"I Did the Grid" Honors fallen Marine Corporal Christopher Scherer.

The sixth annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk returns to East Northport on May 25.

Christopher Scherer, a Corporal in the Marine Corps, died in the line of duty in  Iraq on July 21, 2007. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew
up playing in the neighborhood that he fondly referred to as ‘The Grid’.

On the first day of Memorial Day Weekend participants of all ages experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while running, jogging, or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School.

Each runner's bib will have the printed name of a fallen hero from either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon completion of the course, runners will ring a bell to signify that the Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Sailor, Soldier, or Marine named on the bib will be remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

The race will go by the following schedule:

8 a.m. – 4 Mile Competitive Run (under 12 minute miles), $25.00 for all participants (t-shirt included)

9 a.m. – 1 Mile Fun Run (all welcome) $ 5.00 Under 12 (no t-shirt), $15.00 Under 12 (t-shirt included), $10.00 12 & over (no t-shirt), $20.00 12 & over (t-shirt included)

9:30 a.m. – 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk (all welcome) $25.00 for all participants (t-shirt included)

There is no charge for Gold Star Families or active armed forces.

Proceeds from the race support several projects such as the Cpl Christopher G. Scherer Scholarship Fund and the "Leave No Marine Behind Project," which sends care packages to active duty servicemen and women.
