Topics varied from gymnastics and soccer to sharks and panda bears.

Students in Bari Shapiro’s second-grade class at Harley Avenue Primary School in the Elwood Union Free School District had the opportunity to publish their non-fiction “all about” books at the Elwood Public Library on Jan. 15.
With weeks of preparation, students worked through the writing process to select a topic they were interested in to research. Once a topic was chosen, students used revision strategies to brainstorm and draft copies of their information books. With personal knowledge of the topic, students utilized the school’s library and computer lab to acquire addition information and photos. Students chose topics on a variety of interests, ranging from gymnastics and soccer to sharks and panda bears.

During the publishing event at the Elwood Public Library, students read an excerpt from their books to the audience. Following their presentations, parents had the opportunity to read their child’s entire book.
“I am excited about publishing my book because I get to share it with other people at the public library,” said second-grade student Ellie Mitola.
