The city is currently in the process of redesigning Flatbush Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Lafayette Avenue, in large part to increase pedestrian safety.
During an Aug. 5 public meeting, officials from the Department of Transportation said that from 2010 to 2014, 9 pedestrians and 4 bikes were killed or seriously injured on that stretch of road, while 12 motor vehicle occupants were killed or seriously injured in crashes.
The redesign, they said, will seek to address the streets' excessively long pedestrian crossings, lack of bike access, and turning lanes that increase the chance of vehicle collisions.
