Brookhaven Town Continues Push For Animal Adoptions In New Year

There are 81 cats and 70 dogs that spent the holidays in the shelter but town officials hope they will still find human life-mates in 2023.

BROOKHAVEN, NY — Brookhaven officials are hoping that more of the town's Animal Shelter and Adoption Center residents will find a forever home in 2023.

In its organizational meeting last week, Town Board members last week renewed their plan to raise awareness about adoptions in monthly promotions like "Home for the Holidays," in which free adoptions are offered in December.

Forty-six animals, including 22 dogs, 22 cats, and two kittens were adopted in December.

Councilman Johnathan Kornreich said his legislative aide, Amani Hosein, just adopted a cat named Midnight and he congratulated her, sparking a conversation about how the winter is a good time to adopt.

"It's a good time to get a friend for 2023 — someone that either barks or meows," Supervisor Ed Romaine chimed in. "One of my best friends is my little dog."

Jokingly adding, "At least he wags his tail when I come home."
