LI Pit Bull Rescue Offers Free Adoptions In July After Large Donation

"We're overwhelmed with the generosity.": New York Bully Crew Pit Bull Dad, Craig Fields, on the Cathy Kangas Foundation's support.

EAST PATCHOGUE, NY — Lacey, Diego, Damien, and Mitchie of the New York Bully Crew are officially on the market looking for their forever homes.

And as an added incentive to encourage adoptions at the Long Island-based pit bull shelter, rescuers have announced adoptions are free in the month of July due to a large from the Cathy Kangas Foundation for Animals.

The NY Bully Crew’s main focus is on pit bulls because the breed receives negative stigmatism, abuse and neglect, but the organization also accepts all breeds of dogs. There are currently 82 dogs in the shelter looking for a home and the majority are pit bulls.

The initiative is part of Kangas' Free the Shelters program that she started in 2017 to cover adoption fees for shelter animals. So far, the program has worked with 88 shelters around the United States and Canada to find homes for over 8,000 animals.

The organization, which is located at 1457 Montauk Highway in East Patchogue, is a registered non-profit that rescues bully breeds from municipal shelters that euthanize animals, as well as rescues the animals from the streets and provides them with medical care before putting them up for adoption.

The crew's founder, Craig Fields, who is also a pit bull dad, said his organization is overwhelmed with the generosity of Kangas' foundation, adding that he is "so grateful" the organization was chosen for the month of July.

Kangas adores pit bulls.

"They are gentle, loving dogs that have been vilified," she said. "My foundation is pleased to support this exciting initiative with NY Bully Crew and hopes by the end of July that all of its dogs will find loving homes.”

Potential NY Bully Crew adopters must be vetted first before adopting a dog.

All applicants must give permission to their veterinary office to release records to the crew to process an application. If an applicant does not have a vet, they must contact a local vet and let them know they will be a new client and give permission to speak with them. Without that, the application will be void.

Those who have previously adopted from NY Bully Crew do not have to complete this form.

In addition to outreach with a vet’s office, all applicants must complete an adoption form before coming to the shelter. To fill out an adoption form, click here.

NY Bully Crew is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
