Passenger Killed, Driver Seriously Injured In Suffolk Crash Early Monday: Police

The driver veered off the road and struck several trees, killing one passenger, and injuring himself and two passengers, police say.

YAPHANK, NY — A passenger was killed and a driver was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash in Medford early Monday, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, the crash took place at about 2:50 a.m. on Bellport Avenue, between Long Island Avenue and Horseblock Road.

Jefry Valdez Cruz, 25, of Medford, was driving a 2015 BMW southbound on Bellport Avenue, between Long Island Avenue and Horseblock Road, when his vehicle veered into the northbound lane, left the road and struck several trees, police said.

One passenger, Edgar Guevara Ramos, 22, of Bellport, was pronounced dead at the scene by an EMT from the Yaphank Fire Department, police said.

Valdez Cruz was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said.

Two other male passengers, a 24-year-old from Medford and a 26-year-old from Selden, were transported to the same hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The BMW was impounded for a safety check, police said.
