Patchogue-Area Businesses Warned Of Group Of Potential Scammers 'Creating Confrontational Purchase Disputes'
They appear to try to obtain free merchandise, but may also be used as distractions "to facilitate potential theft," chamber exec says.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Patchogue business owners are being warned about potential scammers operating in the village this week, Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Silvana Aloisio said.
Several businesses have reported encounters with a group of four women who go inside shops and restaurants and "create confrontational purchase disputes" over items they claim to have bought but did not, according to Aloisio.
A Suffolk police spokeswoman told Patch that the only call the department had was from an employee of Ruta Oxaca on East Main Street on Tuesday. The employee reported four women came into the restaurant at around 1 p.m. and asked for a refund for a meal they had last week, but when the business refused a refund, the women left, the spokeswoman said.

"These incidents appear to be attempts to obtain free merchandise and may also be used as distractions to facilitate potential theft," she said.
Aloisio asked businesses alert their staff to stay vigilant and verify all receipts and transactions carefully, as well as follow safety protocols.
