Patchogue To Mark Arbor Day With Tree Planting On Thursday

A Liriodendron Tulipifera, a tulip poplar or Tuliptree, a fast-growing native hardwood, that can reach up to 90 feet will be planted.

PATCHOGUE, NY — Patchogue Village's Conservation Tree Committee will hold its annual Arbor Day Tree Planting and Celebration on Thursday.

The event will kick off at 3 p.m. at 380 and 390 Bay Avenue.

The tree planting event has been organized with Patchogue-Medford Youth and Community Services and the village's Department of Parks and Recreation.

The committee will plant a Liriodendron Tulipifera, also known as the tulip poplar, or Tuliptree, a fast-growing native hardwood prized for its distinctive tulip-shaped flowers, that can reach heights of up to 90 feet.

It is one of the tallest eastern hardwoods and provides excellent shade, vibrant yellow fall color, and a critical habitat for pollinators and birds.

Patchogue Village has been awarded Tree City USA status in 1989, 1990, 2022, 2023, and 2024.

J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture in 1872 that a special day be set aside for planting of trees — Arbor Day, which is now observed throughout the world.

The Arbor Day Foundation is the world's largest nonprofit dedicated to planting trees and promoting their benefits in communities and forests that need them most.

Since its founding in 1972, the organization has helped plant over 500 million trees across more than 60 countries. It works with people, businesses, and governments to support reforestation, urban forestry, and sustainable tree management.
