Patchogue Star Student: 'Handles Ups And Downs With Grace And Humility'

PATCHOGUE, NY — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Nancy Dodge, who nominated Skye, a 12th-grader from Patchogue.

How do you know the star local student?

I’m her proud mom.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

I was unsure, at first, if I should nominate my daughter since I am her mom but as I thought more about it, I felt that since I knew Skye more than anyone else that I could give it a go.

Skye is in the top of her class (ranked 7th in her graduating class), she is also an athlete (plays soccer, volleyball, softball and started playing beach volleyball last summer). Skye plays the clarinet and is in the honors band and the clarinet choir. Skye is also a member of several school clubs and volunteers.

While I am immensely proud of Skye for all of her achievements, I have been most proud of her for being kind, humble, and how she has handled challenges that came her way. She just doesn’t give up, she will just work harder. And, at the end of the day when she comes home, Skye will help her brother with his homework, take her grandmother to run errands, and help in any way asked around the house.

Some of the most important qualities cannot be taught, they just have to be part of who you are and I feel that Skye has those qualities. As Skye’s mom, I have seen all of the ups, downs and in-between moments. In each one of those times, she has always handled them with grace and humility.

Skye is very dedicated and hard-working.
