PATCHOGUE, NY — Christian Guardino, of Patchogue, performed "Leave the Door Open," on Monday night's "American Idol," a performance he hopes will leave the door open for him to be voted one of the top 20 contestants.

The 22-year-old Long Islander was born with a congenital disorder that causes blindness but through experimental treatments has been able to regain some vision, he told the New York Post this week.

Guardino previously appeared on "America's Got Talent" at age 16.

On Monday night, he sang the Silk Sonics song at Disney’s Aulani resort in Hawaii. Katy Perry told the singer that when he sings he "becomes a superhero. It's like Clark Kent turns into Superman."

To vote for a contestant on the show, viewers can text, visit the show's website or download the American Idol app.

"If there’s anything that I feel like I want to do, in the show and in the future through music, I want to bring people together through the message of music and what everybody as a collective has been through in the last few years," he told the Post.

"I want to have everybody have fun. That’s really what I look at going into every performance."
