Obituary: Port Chester Native Thomas J. McCarthy dies at age 83

Army veteran, Iona College graduate, was an accountant.

Thomas J. McCarthy, 83, of Moss Creek, SC, who was born and raised in Port Chester, died at home on March 21, 2013, with loving family members by his bedside. He was 83.

Tom was born on Sept. 29, 1929 in Port Chester, to the late John Thomas and Mary Hayes McCarthy. He grew up in Port Chester, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and graduated from Iona College in New Rochelle.

After working for a public accounting firm in New York City and serving as Comptroller for the Town of Westport, CT, he opened his own C.P.A. firm, which he operated for more than 30 years.

Tom met his wife Julia at a mutual friend's wedding and later married on April 23, 1960. Together, they raised five children and in 1996, moved from Ridgefield, CT, to Hilton Head Island, SC, where he enjoyed painting scenes from the low country and other places visited during his frequent travels.

Tom was a past-President of Rotary Club, a member of the New York and Connecticut Societies of CPA's, an avid golfer and a member of the Moss Creek Golf Club.

He was preceded in death by two of his siblings, Fabian H. McCarthy and Mary P. Cammarato.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia of Hilton Head, three sons; Thomas of Ridgefield, CT., Stephen of Mc Cordsville, IN., Richard of Novato, CA., two daughters; Kathleen of Reno, NV. Pamela of Santa Monica, CA., nine grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, March 27 at 11 am at St. Francis by the Sea. Directly following Mass, Tom was laid to rest at Beaufort National Cemetery, 1601 Boundary St., Beaufort, SC.
