PORT CHESTER, NY — Port Chester has been recognized nationally for its commitment to making Advanced Placement classes a part of a diverse range of a student's curriculum.

Port Chester High School has been named to the Advanced Placement School Honor Roll, earning a Silver distinction for its outstanding work in welcoming more students into AP courses and supporting them on the path to college success.

The school also earned the AP Access Award for ensuring AP coursework is equally available to students no matter their backgrounds.

"At Port Chester High School, we continuously push students to challenge themselves and defy the odds," Principal Luke Sotherden said. "We believe students will rise to the occasion. This award shows that regardless of who you are, where you’re from, or what your circumstances are, you can take on a challenge and be successful."

The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are "delivering results for students while broadening access." Schools on the AP School Honor Roll may also earn the AP Access Award, which honors schools that demonstrate a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework.

Schools can earn the recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.

The AP School Honor Roll offers four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

The College Board’s AP Program allows students to pursue college-level coursework while still in high school. Through AP courses, each culminating in an exam, the students can earn college credit and placement.
