NASSAU COUNTY, NY — There's a coastal flood advisory in effect until 2 p.m. Thursday, and then the alert level rises to "watch" for Friday morning through Friday afternoon for northern Nassau County, the National Weather Service said.

It may or may not bring rain.

"A new storm is taking shape just off the mid-Atlantic and southern New England coasts and will bring rain to part of the Northeast with the risk of localized flooding into Friday," said Alex Sosnowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist. "However, where rain does not reach from the coastal storm, many more days of dry conditions are in store."

September has been quite dry in the region, and this month may rank high on the list of driest Septembers on record from portions of the Midwest to parts of the Northeast should rain continue to avoid the region, Sosnowski said.

Thursday, we could see minor flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low-lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding.

Friday, there is potential for widespread flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront. Numerous road closures are possible, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will potentially become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

Also, there is the potential for additional rounds of coastal flooding through at least the weekend.

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed, the NWS said. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
