Hazardous Air Cancels Night 1 Of Prospect Park Music Festival

Prospect Park's annual summer music festival cancelled its opening night performances as NYC faces days of hazardous air quality.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, NY — It's a no-go on opening night for BRIC's summer festival in Prospect Park as smoke continues to fill the NYC skyline.

Wednesday's opening night concert, slated to include, blues musician Taj Mahal singer Corinne Bailey Rae was cancelled outright and won't be rescheduled, organizers announced Wednesday.

"The health of our staff and the communities we serve is the number one priority for BRIC and we can’t, in good conscience, risk the wellbeing of our friends and neighbors who may have high risk health issues," organizers said Wednesday.

The festival will continue as scheduled on Saturday with Family Day, scheduled to include duo Soul Science Lab and Brooklyn-based group Olivia K and The Parkers.

The festival will continue through August 24th as schedule, organizers said.

BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! is the latest cancellation in a long series Wednesday, as NYC continues to fill with smoke from wildfires in Canada.

New Yorkers on Wednesday were advised to keep outdoor time to a minimum, as students' outdoor and after school activities were cancelled. In Crown Heights, Community Board 8 moved their board meeting online.

La Guardia Airport on Wednesday afternoon grounded flights due to low visibility.
