Here are the top three stories in Queens today:
- Governor Kathy Hochul has signed a Queens senator’s bill into law that requires the state to publish a quarterly report about the origins of guns used in crimes — including who purchased them and where. The bill aims to crack down on guns being transported into New York from other states and was sponsored by State Sen. Michael Gianaris. The signing of the bill was welcomed by activist groups that aim to end gun violence. (Flushing Post)
- One person is dead after a Queens Village shooting that occurred early Monday morning. Police say 31-year-old Peter Johnson was shot in the head on 212th Street near Hollis Avenue, and was transported to Jamaica Hospital where he was pronounced dead. So far, no arrests have been made. (CBS New York)
- On Dec. 22, Queens Borough President Donovan Richards launched the Queens Cultural Tourism Grant program. The program will directly support Queens as a culturally vibrant destination by funding not-for-profit arts and cultural programming and events across the borough. All grant recipients must be registered as a 501(c)3 with the state of New York, and the deadline to apply for the program is Monday, Jan. 24, 2022. (QNS.com)
