Ex-Correction Officer Shoots Would-Be Car Cracksman In Face: NYPD

The former officer shot a man who was breaking into his car in Laurelton, police said.

QUEENS, NY — A retired correction officer shot a man in the face who tried to break into his car in Queens on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The man is likely to die, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Police discovered the wounded man around 1:15 p.m., the spokeswoman said. The ex-correction officer had spotted him and another man breaking into his car at the corner of 138th Avenue and 227th Street in Laurelton, according to the spokeswoman.

One of the men struck the former officer in the face with a gun when he tried to stop them,the NYPD spokeswoman said. The ex-guard then shot one of the men in the face, she said.

The man who was shot was taken to Jamaica Hospital but the other was not taken into custody, the spokeswoman said. The retired officer suffered cuts to his face and was brought to the same hospital, she said.
