Here are the top stories today in Queens:
- An international Italian restaurant chain is opening in Long Island City next year. After facing delays, Serafina will open in the second half of 2022 inside the recently constructed Jackson Park complex, on the ground floor of the easternmost tower, situated on the corner of Queens Boulevard and Jackson Avenue. The three-tower, mixed-use Jackson Park development is located between 28-30 and 28-40 Jackson Ave. (Astoria Post)
- Police are looking for four people who were seen fleeing the scene of a deadly shooting in Queens, which took the life of a 40-year-old man who was shot in the head and chest. The victim was brought to Jamaica Hospital where he died. A 25-year-old man is currently in stable condition, also at Jamaica Hospital, after being shot in the leg and shoulder. It is unknown what, if any, relationship existed between the deceased victim and the surviving victim. (ABC7)
- A mysterious metal pipe shattered a Long Island City couple's 9th story double-paned glass window on Friday afternoon. The apartment owner says she believes a construction crew working on the ground might have had something to do with it; however, the couple says they can't file a police report because nothing criminal happened. They can't file a legal case either because neither of them was injured. (NBC New York)
- Police are looking for multiple suspects after they said two men were stabbed at a subway station in Queens on Monday afternoon. A 17-year-old was stabbed in the leg and a 20-year-old was stabbed in the arm with unknown objects on the M and R line platform at the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue station. Both victims’ conditions remain unclear at this time, however, one victim was transported to Elmhurst Hospital. (NY1)
- Two Queens elected leaders are urging the NYC Schools Chancellor not to end geographic priority in the high school admissions process. On Friday, Assemblyman Edward Braunstein (D-Bayside) and State Sen. John Liu (D-Bayside) sent a letter to Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter in response to the Department of Education’s proposal to eliminate geographic priorities in the admissions process, which currently gives priority in the high school admissions process to students who live in a specific district, borough, or neighborhood zone. Critics of the change say that many Queens schools are already crowded, and the borough is not served well by public transportation, which would be a hardship for students who would have to travel to other parts of the city.
