Multi-Car I-95 Crash Involving Semi In Rye Sends 3 To Hospital

RYE, NY — A weekend crash, involving three cars and a tractor-trailer, on the New England Thruway left three hospitalized, and required the tricky rescue of a driver pinned in a car.

At 7:25 a.m. on Sunday, the Rye Fire Department was dispatched to the major crash on I-95 southbound. While en route, firefighters were told by Rye police that one crash victim was trapped inside a vehicle.

After assessing the situation, the first firefighters to arrive on the scene quickly began the extrication of the trapped driver.

Rye Firefighters worked to remove the driver while Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS attended to the other passengers.

After stabilizing the vehicle, the rescuers then had to maneuver the tractor-trailer to free the driver.

In all, three involved in the crash were taken to Westchester Medical Center by ambulance.

Rye police managed traffic control at the scene, while the fire department and Vincent Service Inc. worked to clear the vehicles and address fluid spills on the roadway. Remarkably, all of the affected lanes were cleared and reopened by 8:40 a.m.

The crash is being investigated by the New York State Police.

"The swift and coordinated response by all involved agencies ensured that everyone received the necessary assistance and medical treatment," Rye fire officials said of the remarkable efforts at the crash scene.

Mutual aid from Rye Brook and Port Chester were placed on standby to cover any additional calls while the primary units worked at the scene.
