2nd Arrest In Teen's Stabbing At Mall On Long Island: Police

The 15-year-old was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, Suffolk police say.

LAKE RONKONKOMA, NY — The second person has been charged in connection with the stabbing of a 16-year-old boy at Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove the day after Thanksgiving, Suffolk police said Monday.

The 15-year-old, who is from Lake Ronkonkoma, was charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, and he is scheduled to appear in the Youth Part of First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.

His identity is being withheld due to his status as a minor.

It was not immediately clear if he has legal representation.

Suffolk police say the 16-year-old boy was stabbed when he tried to intervene in a fight between a small group of people on the sidewalk outside of the food court. He was taken to a local hospital in stable condition for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Another 16-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries sustained during the fight, according to police.

Tavion Elting, 18, of East Patchogue, was indicted Dec. 23 on weapons charges in connection with having a loaded 9mm gun that fell out of his pocket during the brawl, District Attorney Ray Tierney's office previously said.
