MTA Bans Alcohol Consumption On LIRR, Metro-North Over SantaCon

Alcohol will be banned on trains and platforms, officials say.

NEW YORK, NY — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said it will once again ban alcohol consumption on Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road trains during SantaCon this weekend.

The ban will be in effect beginning at 4 a.m. on Saturday through noon on Sunday.

Alcohol consumption will also be prohibited at all Metro-North and LIRR station platforms during these hours.

MTA police will have an increased presence at Penn Station, Grand Central Madison, and Grand Central Terminal to enforce the weekend alcohol restriction, and officers will confiscate alcoholic beverages and issue summonses.

Violators may also be subject to removal from trains or stations by police.

MTA Police Chief John Mueller said his department's top priority is ensuring riders "can celebrate safely."

“The holiday season is a wonderful time of year, and we want everyone to get to their destination smoothly and on time while enjoying the festivities," he added.
