Sachem Celebrates Autism Awareness And Acceptance

Throughout April, the Sachem Central School District celebrated World Autism Month. Students and staff participated in several activities to teach one another about autism spectrum disorder and created displays to promote awareness.

Fifth grade peer buddies at Waverly Elementary School pushed into classes to teach their peers about autism. They gave interactive presentations to help students learn how to be a friend to those who learn and communicate differently. Additionally, classes collaborated during physical education to participate in sensory-friendly exercises. Through these activities, Waverly promoted inclusivity throughout the building.

At Wenonah Elementary School, students created colorful project hallway displays to promote autism acceptance. The building also held an Autism Acceptance Month T-Shirt Design contest. Fifth grader Brendan Collins won with his design that read, “I’m Unstoppable.” Wenonah staff members came together to wear the shirt on April 28.

On April 30, more than 30 staff members from Chippewa Elementary School and their families participated in the EJ Autism Foundation four-mile walk in East Islip. The organization supports programs and schools across Long Island that work with children who have autism.
