Teaching 9/11 in the Classroom

Social studies departments offering remembrance and education of historic event.

With the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 approaching, the social studies departments in the Sachem Central School District have increased education on the historic event in American history.

Sachem High School North social studies department chair Tom Cestaro said teachers in his building continue to explore how the events will be understood as part of the larger context of United States and world history.

“We also want to commemorate the anniversary with remembrance of all those who gave there lives on that day or in service to our great nation,” he said.

Cestaro provided the social studies department with helpful educational links for other teachers to use during their lessons. Ones like Behind the Headlines offer specific lesson plans about Sept. 11.

Cestaro said he has also been in contact with Ron Mincio, who is currently in Kentucky shadowing his son, Kevin, a Sachem alum who is riding his bike from California to Ground Zero to raise money and awareness for children of fallen soldiers.
