2 Suffolk Residents Saved After Nissequogue River Dam Breaks Because Of Flood
The residents were trapped on the second floor of their home. Smithtown firefighters used a boat to bring them to safety.

SMITHTOWN, NY — The Nissequogue River dam broke on Monday morning because of "severe" flooding, the Smithtown Fire Department stated.
The Town of Smithtown received approximately 10 inches of rain from the rainstorm, the town reported.
The department was called to the dam break near Route 25 and Route 25A around 9:30 a.m., said Rick Torre, the fire department's public information officer. Numerous occupied homes were reportedly in danger because of "raging flood water," the department stated.

Two residents were trapped on the second floor of a home near the head of Nissequogue River.
Smithtown Fire Department members made their way to the home using an emergency watercraft and brought the residents to safety.

Heavy rains and flash flooding impacted the township on Sunday night and early Monday.
Sunday night's torrential rain led to a long string of stranded motorists and emergency water rescues, as well as flooded basements, closed roads and even a small landslide reported across Long Island, according to the National Weather Service.
