SMITHTOWN, NY — Dufus and Mooney, 2-and-a-half-year-old brothers, are the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pets of the Week.

They are the "feline equivalent of an old married couple who’ve seen a lot together, and still choose to snuggle on the same couch," the shelter wrote.

The brothers, who are "sweet and affectionate," were adopted for a senior citizen who could no longer care for them, the shelter wrote. Now, they’re back in search of their next chapter.

"Let’s be honest — these boys are in need of some TLC, a loving home…and, well, a diet," the shelter wrote. "Both Dufus and Mooney are accustomed to the good life: quiet days, soft laps, and the kind of love that comes with a calm, peaceful home. They’d thrive best with older kids and cat-savvy humans who understand the art of a slow approach and a steady schedule."

Dufus sports what the shelter called a "badge of honor — an old eye injury that’s being treated on our watch."

He doesn’t let it slow him down one bit, and Mooney is right by his side, ready for head scratches and attention from anyone willing to dole it out, according to the shelter.

"If you’re looking for a pair of low-drama, high-affection companions who will fill your home with warmth, whiskers, and occasional judgment about your snack choices, Dufus and Mooney might just be your perfect match," shelter staff wrote. "Adopt them together and you’ll be rewarded with twice the purrs, double the love, and an unbeatable daily reminder that sometimes the best things in life come in pairs."

Interested potential families for Dufus and Mooney must first fill-out an application to schedule a time to properly interact with your prospective soul mate in a domestic setting.

"If you are looking for a fun-loving, yarn-tossing ball of love, stop by the Kitten Nursery or the Cat Condos at the Smithtown Animal Shelter and find a PURR-fect soulmate or two," the shelter stated.

All of the felines at the shelter are current on vaccines and have received a full workup (blood work, Feline HIV & Leukemia tested, physical exam etc.) by a board-certified veterinarian.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
