SMITHTOWN, NY — FloJo, a 5-and-a-half-year-old female white and tan terrier mix, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

She is "delectable," shelter staff said.

"Named after the Olympic runner for her incredible speed and stamina, this little lady spent days on the run before our volunteer dog trappers finally won the race and brought her to safety!" the shelter wrote.

When rescued, FloJo’s condition revealed just how tough her journey had been: covered in fleas and ticks, anemic, and absolutely terrified, the shelter wrote. With expert care and plenty of TLC from the team at the shelter, she is now healthy, medically clear, and ready to cross the finish line straight into a forever home, the shelter stated.

"FloJo is still finding her stride when it comes to trust and confidence, but beneath her timid exterior lies a gentle, endearing, bright soul just waiting to shine," the shelter wrote. "She’ll do best in a patient home that can cheer her on as she adjusts to family life. FloJo would do well in most homes, including those with cats, calm children, and possibly dogs. With time, love, and encouragement, this resilient little runner is sure to grow into the true champion of your heart."

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself. Please allow yourself an hour minimum to meet with your potential new family member.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time. Potential fosters need to have no other pets or young children in the home.
