Here are the top stories today in Smithtown:

  1. Sergeant asks Smithtown organization for help saving cat. Staff Sergeant Madd, whose deployment is coming to a close, is seeking to bring Stan the cat home with him. Guardians of Rescue needs help and donations from the public to make it happen. (Smithtown Patch)
  2. Tree Planting Ceremony recognizes Smithtown's 475 COVID-19 Deaths. The memorial tree is a four-inch caliper Dawn Redwood, boasting stunning red foliage in the Fall. The tree was selected by the Department of Environment and Waterways Foresters (certified arborists) under the direction of David Barnes, who is also a landscape architect. A plaque unveiling, and name reading ceremony will take place in late Spring of 2022. The memorial plaque will be donated by the Town of Smithtown. (smithtownmatters.com)
  3. Indian Princess masterpiece at Lake Ronkonkoma awing visitors. Passerby's honk and wave when they see Todd Arnett, looking up at his latest masterpiece: a 32-foot-tall carving of an Indian Princess. Atop a substantial base, the carved Native American woman overlooks Lake Ronkonkoma. Located on the north side of the lake at 279 Lake Shore Road, the princess holds a cormorant in her hands as she gazes across the lake at an Indian Chief carving, another Arnett original that he finished about seven years ago. A sign from the New York Folklore Society accompanies her and tells her tale. (Greater Long Island)
  4. Theater Review 'White Christmas' At Engeman Theater. Under the astute direction of Matt Kunkel, the entire ensemble was energetic and flawless throughout. Kyle Dixon’s innovative set design, especially the quintessential Vermont barn, added a bit of holiday charm to the show. There are many incredible 1950-style costumes by Dustin Cross, all of them ideally suited for each number. The Engeman Theater is having a fundraiser for the local food pantry, so please bring a few extra dollars to drop in the baskets as you leave. WHITE CHRISTMAS runs from now until Jan. 2. Tickets may be purchased by calling (631) 261-2900, online at www.EngemanTheater.com, or visiting the Engeman Theater Box Office at 250 Main St., Northport. (smithtownmatters.com)
