SMITHTOWN, NY — Drago, a "velvet blue brindle bulldozer of love" who is 5 months old, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.
"He's not a Russian boxing opponent ... but like the ending of Rocky IV, this puppy is guaranteed to bring people together, cheering and applauding his absolute pure puppy heart!" the shelter wrote.
Drago is "equal parts cuddle bug and canine comedian," according to the shelter.

"This happy-go-lucky pup greets every person and animal like a long-lost friend at a surprise party," the shelter stated. "His current hobbies include: loving everyone he meets, wagging his whole body at the speed of light, professional zoomie artist and will accompany you to the bathroom as if he is your personal security detail."
At just a few months old, Drago has already mastered the art of housebreaking, which shelter staff say is "pretty impressive, considering he’s still working on mastering the concept of the wiggle bum."

"We're joking... he wiggles his bootie just perfectly!" the shelter wrote.
He’s a growing boy, weighing in at a cuddly 35 pounds now. The shelter expects him to fill out to become an 80 pounds lap dog "loaded with pure joy and snuggles."
"Drago is fully housebroken, great with kids, cats, dogs, and probably even your weird neighbor," the shelter wrote. "He is currently practicing for his future as a professional couch hippo and sunbathing land seal and looking for a home that matches his high-energy lifestyle. If your family’s ready to laugh more, move more, and experience unconditional love in its goofiest form, come meet Drago. He’s not just a dog—he’s a whole personality."

If you are interested in meeting Drago, please fill out an application and schedule a date/time to properly interact in a domestic setting, which includes the shelter's Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. Family Pet Meet and Greets and at-home interactions are also welcome and an integral part of the adoption process.
While the shelter is open to the public, it asks that people call ahead to schedule an appointment.
Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself. Please allow yourself an hour minimum to meet with your potential new family member.
The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time. Potential fosters need to have no other pets or young children in the home.
