SMITHTOWN, NY — Oswald, a white and black male domestic rabbit, is the Smithtown Animal Shelter's Pet of the Week.

He was brought to the shelter as a stray. The shelter did not list Oswald's age.

"Sadly, Oswald and several other bunnies were found abandoned in cold winter temperatures," the shelter wrote. "Despite this heartbreak, he has overcome his rough start with confidence and charm."

Oswald’s "captivating personality" suits his "majestic good looks," according to the shelter.

"This inquisitive and adventurous boy isn’t shy about expressing his likes and dislikes, and once he trusts you, he can be incredibly affectionate," shelter staff said. "Oswald is also litter trained, making him a wonderful companion for a loving home. He would thrive in a spacious environment where he can run, explore, and stretch his legs — small cages simply won’t do for this handsome fellow! Let’s find Oswald the forever home he deserves, where he’ll be cherished as part of a caring family."

The Smithtown Animal Shelter primarily accommodates dogs and cats, with the ability to assist only one exotic pet at a time.

If you are interested in meeting Oswald, please fill out an application to schedule time to properly interact with your prospective soul mate in a domestic setting.

Hours are currently Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays and Wednesday evenings are by appointment only.

The Smithtown Animal Shelter's primary concern is finding the perfect home for each animal that finds his/her way to it. The Animal Control Officers and kennel attendants at the Smithtown Animal Shelter will go out of their way to ensure both the rescued and rescuer are made for one another. If you have other pets, you can arrange to bring your four-legged family member into the shelter or they can set up an at-home meet & greet to see how your prospective new addition does with other family members, pets or the household itself.

The shelter is also seeking foster volunteers. Foster parents provide temporary care for cats, kittens and dogs in their own homes. Some animals need as little as two weeks of care, while others may need care for an extended time.
