Corey's Promise To Host Charitable Golf Outing In Smithtown: 'Every Dollar Helps'
The charity helps families with a child battling cancer. "Corey's legacy is love, and through this outing, we turn that love into action."

SMITHTOWN, NY — Corey's Promise, a local cancer charity, is set to host its third annual golf outing in support of families with a child facing a cancer diagnosis.
The outing is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 7 at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown. People may register on the Corey's Promise website.
Corey's Promise was founded in memory of Corey Phelan, who died of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2022. Corey's parents, Christie and Chris Phelan, launched the nonprofit together.

Christie said organizing the annual golf outing is "incredibly emotional and fulfilling."
"There’s a mix of pride, gratitude, and deep love each year when the day arrives," Christie Phelan told Patch. "Seeing everyone come together in Corey’s name — to celebrate him, support families, and keep his spirit alive — makes every minute of planning worth it. It’s a reminder that his life continues to make an impact."

Interested parties can register for golf ($275) or dinner only ($125). Dinner and access to raffles, music and more are included in the golfing option.
The Huntington-based charity is seeking raffle baskets and donations by July 25. Some basket ideas include sports and tailgating; self-care and spa; coffee or wine; family game night; gift cards; date night; kids fun; and home essentials.

In the first year of the golf outing, Corey's Promise raised just over $40K. The second year surpassed expectations, Christie said, bringing in nearly $55K.
"Every dollar helps us provide financial and emotional support to families navigating pediatric cancer, and we’re hopeful this year will be our biggest yet," Christie said.
Corey Phelan, a left-handed pitcher in the Philadelphia Phillies Minor League system, was not an avid golfer, his mother said, but he was "all heart."
"Competitive, full of life, and someone who loved bringing people together," Christie said. "This event reflects that spirit. It’s fun, it’s full of community, and there’s laughter and love all around. It’s not about the golf — it’s about honoring Corey through joy and generosity."

Non-golfers are welcome to participate, either on the links or just at the dinner.
"You don’t have to love golf to love what this day represents," Christie said. "It’s about making a difference. It’s about community. It’s about standing with families going through the unimaginable. Whether you're playing, joining us for dinner only, sponsoring, donating, or just showing up — you’re part of something bigger, and we need every one of you."
Corey's Promise was created so that no family fighting pediatric cancer ever feels alone, Christie said.
"This event is just one way we bring that mission to life. Corey’s legacy is love, and through this outing, we turn that love into action. We’re so grateful for the continued support — it means everything."
