  1. A Lake Grove man has been arrested for approaching an 11-year-old-child while she was walking home from Selden Middle School. According to the police, the 28-year-old man made sexual comments while following her. Luckily, she managed to escape, but the suspect crashed into a pole when he tried to flee from the scene.   2. The ten nurses who resigned on the same day from the Avalon Gardens Rehabilitation and Health Center in Smithtown back in 2006 could have a hearing before the U.S. Supreme Court. The group quit work on April 7, 2006, claiming lower pay, longer-than-expected shifts and other unfair work conditions. Read the whole story here. (Smithtown Patch)
  3. A Solar System Model workshop will be hosted at the Avalon Nature Preserve on Jan. 15 at 10 a.m. Astronomer David B leads the event with a walk-through model of the solar system.   • Did you know that people used to ski all winter on Long Island? The fun started in 1965 at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Back in the day, that hill was 344 feet tall.   • Brookhaven Town will spread animal adoption awareness throughout the year. The town discussed a new plan in a board meeting to help pets to find their forever homes. Currently, 81 cats and 70 dogs live in the shelter, waiting for adoption. (Patch)
