LAST MINUTE: St. Baldrick's Day Fundraiser Saturday at Napper Tandy's

All proceeds go towards childhood cancer research grants funded by the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

Do you want to know how you could help raise money for childhood cancer? By shaving your head Saturday.

Head to Napper Tandy's, located at 15 East Main Street in Smithtown, from 3-10 p.m. on Saturday and join those in attendance for St. Baldrick's Day. At the event you could donate time volunteering for the organization, donate money, or participate by shaving your head in support of the cause while raising funds from your friends, family and more.

According to the St. Baldrick's Foundation website, "the St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government."

In an email forwarded Friday to Smithtown Patch from event organizer William Connick, the mother of Cassandra Steinle, a 15-year-old girl who is critically ill from lung disease, a result from her treatment for Neuroblastoma IV, told her family's story and encouraged locals to help the cause.

My name is Eleanore Steinle and my daughter, Cassandra is a survivor of Neuroblastoma IV. She is currently critically ill due to lung disease caused by the Neuroblastoma treatment. She is 15 years old and very amazing. We spent two weeks in January in the PICU at Stony Brook University Hospital due to carbon dioxide poisoning related to the poor functioning of her lungs.  She has not been able to go to school or really anywhere except doctor’s appointments since we left the hospital.

She had it on her heart to participate in St. Baldricks this year. She realizes that with the proper funding; children like her can be saved from cancer AND a lifetime of ill effects of the cancer treatment. She would like to be a part of others not having to go through what she is going through now. Hence, she is a shave. As of this writing, she has raised $920 on her own using her own resources to spread the word.

Now here is something interesting, about ten years ago, my business was a sponsor of St. Baldricks at Napper Tandy’s in Smithtown and my daughter did an honorary first shave of Town Supervisor Patrick Veccio’s head at the event.

Make sure to head to the pub and help a great cause out.
