Man Killed, Another Seriously Injured In Suffolk Collision: Police

The driver who was killed crossed into oncoming traffic and smashed into another car head-on, police say.

SMITHTOWN, NY — A man was killed and another man was seriously injured in a collision in Smithtown on Thursday night, Suffolk police said.

Michael Bittleman, 36, of East Northport, was driving a 2018 Nissan westbound on Middle Country Road, near Highway Place, when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound 1989 Mercedes Benz in a head-on collision around 9:30 p.m., police said.

Bittleman was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 63-year-old St. James man, suffered serious injuries and was brought to a nearby hospital.
