NYS 2nd Senate District Preview: Mario Mattera Vs. Susan Berland

The incumbent state senator, Mario Mattera, a Republican, is set to take on Democratic challenger Susan Berland.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — State Sen. Mario Mattera (R—Smithtown) will be challenged by Democrat Susan Berland for his NYS 2nd Senate District seat on Nov. 8.


The candidates:

  • Mario Mattera (Incumbent, Republican)
  • Susan Berland (Democrat)

Mattera defeated Democrat Michael Siderakis in November 2020 to win election to the state Senate. Mattera earned 90,984 votes to Siderakis's 66,575 — 57.7 percent to 42.2 percent.

The seat was previously held by Republican John Flanagan for multiple terms.

Both Mattera and Berland ran unopposed in their respective primaries.

Berland is a former Suffolk County legislator. She was narrowly defeated by Republican Manny Esteban Sr. in the 2021 election. Berland has set her sights on the New York State Senate, as she will look to unseat Mattera on Nov. 8.

The 2nd NYS Senate District includes Centereach, Commack, Coram, Deer Park, Dix Hills, East Northport, East Setauket, Farmingville, Fort Salonga, Greenlawn, Hauppauge, Huntington, Huntington Station, Kings Park, Lake Grove, Lake Ronkonkoma, Medford, Melville, Nesconset, Northport, Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station, Ronkonkoma, Selden, Setauket, South Setauket, Smithtown, St. James and Stony Brook.
