Riding the Wind at Long Beach

Residents can catch some winds and waves through a summer program run by the Town of Smithtown.

A few would-be windsurfers were grappling with the waves on Thursday afternoon at Long Beach in Nissequogue as part of a recreation program offered by the Town of Smithtown.

The course is part of the summer recreation program offered through the town. A total of 11 sessions run from now through August.

Hauppauge resident Grace Koch said she has wanted to enroll her kids for the past few years and finally got the chance this year. Her daughter, age 13, and son, age 14, were doing just fine balancing on the board and catching the wind and waves.

"They finally got a little wind today, so they are getting a chance to try it out," she said.

Participants need to know how to swim and bring either a pair of sneakers or water shoes. The two-week sessions cost $125 for residents and $140 for non-residents.

"We're always happiest on the water," said Koch.
