  3. It took the jury four hours to convict Leniz "La Diablita" Escobar in the deaths of four young men in Central Islip on April 11, 2017. Prosecutors convinced the jury that Escobar was both "bait" that lured the young men into the park that day and the ā€œmastermindā€ who helped plot the quadruple slaying. 4. On April 5, Smithtown High School West Criminal justice students learned first-hand the responsibility of a NYPD’s K-9 unit. Johnny, a Belgian Malinois, and his handlers explained the training that goes into a four-legged member of the NYPD. There are 54 dogs in the NYPD’s K-9 unit that focus on the transit system, parades and special events in Times Square. All of the pups can sniff out bombs and others are trained to detect other substances. (Smithtown Matters)
