- Friday morning Long Islanders woke up to find their power out; high winds battered the region, knocking down trees and power lines. According to the PSEG outage map, nearly 7,000 of those outages were in Suffolk County with Brookhaven Town hit the hardest. A 68-mph wind gust, the highest on the island, was recorded in Orient at 4 a.m. (Patch)
- Meet the Smithtown Animal Shelter’s Pet of the Week, Blaze! He was found abandoned and left in a cage at Blydenburgh Park. Blaze is a 9-year-old male Pit Mix who absolutely loves to play with toys, give kisses, and eat lots of food! Once he trusts you, he’ll love you forever. Blaze is very loyal and protective of his people, so he will need a home that can help properly introduce him to new people, said shelter staff. If you are interested in meeting Blaze, please call ahead to schedule an hour to properly interact with him in a domestic setting, which includes our Meet and Greet Room, the dog runs, and our Dog Walk trail. - This September, crews will start construction on the Kings Park business district sewer expansion. The expansion in Kings Park will provide about 120 new sewer hookups, over 100 of which will link to commercial properties, the spokesperson reported. Smithtown residents support the initiative for their township. (Greater Long Island)
- A house fire in East Setauket left a woman dead and a man and infant were injured. Stephen Ortner, 30, a resident of the home, escaped through a second-floor window onto a roof ledge and handed his 10-month-old son to a passerby below, police said. Lisa Ostrowski, 31, the mother of the child, was not able to escape the home and was found dead once the fire was extinguished. The fire's cause was non-criminal, police said following a preliminary investigation. (Patch)
