  1. See crimes reported in the Smithtown area between April 3 - 10. April 7: Burglary at Mr. Smoke Shop — two people kicked in the front glass and stole cash and cigarettes. April 6: Burglary at Smithtown Acupuncture — someone broke the glass front window of and stole cash. April 4: Grand larceny at Smithtown Self Storage — someone stole rims and tires from three vehicles. (Patch)
  2. Stolen items valued at $500,000 were stolen by trio at the Melville Coin, Stamp, and Collectible Show that took place on Broadhollow Road on Sunday, April 10. The vendor was packing up for the day and left the items in a box in the care of an acquaintance. A woman distracted the man while another man approached the table, picked up the box, and walked out of the room. Anyone with information regarding the suspects or robbery has been asked to contact Suffolk County Police Second Squad Detectives by calling 631-854-8252 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.   3. Long Island is dealing with dead zones from rust tides caused by high amounts of nitrogen, the solution is to upgrade septic systems to prevent leakage into the waterways. Stony Brook University scientist Christopher Gobler emphasized at his annual State of the Bays lecture last Wednesday that excessive nitrogen loading from wastewater is an ongoing threat for Long Island waters. In support our nations veterans, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency will host its third annual Drive-thru Resource and Stand Down Event on Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. in the north parking lot of the H Lee Dennison Building located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. A variety of free resources will be offered by 22 organizations and county agencies. (LongIsland.com)

Stony Brook Heart Institute is one of only five elite sites nationwide and the only facility on Long Island to be chosen to take part in the first-phase clinical trial for PerQseal in advance of submission for approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). "The PerQseal device is the first suture-less, fully-absorbable intravascular 'patch' that seals an artery from the inside after heart valve repair or replacement.
