Smithtown Fire Rescue Delivers Baby On Way To Hospital

The baby girl, delivered in the back of an ambulance, is healthy; and the mother is doing well, the department stated.

SMITHTOWN, NY — Smithtown Fire Rescue was called on to deliver a baby girl in the back of an ambulance en route to the hospital on Friday afternoon.

Smithtown dispatch received a call for a woman in labor inside a car on Brooksite Drive at 3:13 p.m., Rick Torre, public information officer for the Smithtown Fire Department, told Patch.

Third Assistant Chief Joseph Palazzo arrived first and radioed to Chief Dan Dongvort that a woman was in active labor.

Smithtown Rescue ambulance arrived and delivered a healthy baby girl in the back of the ambulance, Torre said. The 7 pound, 5 ounces baby girl and her mother are healthy and doing well and were transported to Stony Brook Hospital, Torre said.
