SAINT JAMES, NY — Bayla Goldberg, a student of Smithtown High School East, received the perfect birthday present.

The 11th grader, who celebrates her birthday on Leap Day, Feb. 29, won the state championships in the uneven bars at the New York State High School Gymnastics Championships on March 1, in Buffalo, the Smithtown School District announced.

Goldberg scored a 9.775 on the uneven bars to win the gold medal.
