Smithtown HS West Science Research Students Excel At State Competition

The students' work was titled "Links between microplastics and harmful algal blooms."

SMITHTOWN, NY — After winning top recognition at the Long Island Science Congress, Smithtown High School West juniors Nicole Gullason and Natasha Mishra were awarded High Honors at the New York State Science Congress, held in Syracuse on Sunday, the Smithtown School District announced.

The students were awarded for their work, which is titled "Links between microplastics and harmful algal blooms."

Smithtown Science Research Coordinator Joanne Figueiredo has mentored Gullason and Mishra for the past two years.

"Nicole and Natasha use their brilliance and their passion for science to solve real world problems," Figueiredo said in a news release. "Their success puts a spotlight on the amazing work that science research students do in this school district!"
