Smithtown Library's Main Branch Closed Until Further Notice
Library still without power as of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The lights are still out at Smithtown Library's main branch on Wednesday morning.Â
Smithtown Special Library District's main branch, located at 1 N. Country Road, remains closed until further notice after a utility pole fire left the building without electricity and cable on Tuesday morning.Â
Library staff said both Verizon and Optimum Online have come to repair the phone lines and Internet, but they are still waiting to get power turned on by Long Island Power Authority.
Elizabeth Flagler, a spokeswoman for LIPA, said crews were on the scene last night repairing the damage, replacing the utility pole and rehanging the wire.Â
Flagler said crews had to replace 75 feet of wire and the riser located on top of the pole.Â
"It took longer than expected. They are still at the site and hope to have it energized within the hour," she wrote to Patch at roughly 11:30 a.m.Â
All programs scheduled for the Smithtown library's main branch have been cancelled, and library staff members are calling registered patrons via telephone to announce the news.Â
"They are not being shifted to another location, we already have programs scheduled for our spaces," said an administrative staff member.Â
Patrons can take out or return library books, DVDs or other materials to any of the library district's other branches: Â Nesconset library branch, 148 Smithtown Boulevard, Neconset; or Commack branch, 3 Indian Head Road, Commack.Â
Residents are asked to check the library's website frequently as updated information will be posted as soon as it is available.Â
Robert Lusak, director of the Smithtown Special Library District, could not be immediately reached as he is onsite at the Smithtown branch handling the power outage.Â
